Philomena Essed
Philomena Johanna Maria Essed (* 1955 in Utrecht ) is a professor of critical race, gender and leadership theory at Antioch University in Yellow Springs .
Career
Essed is the daughter of Surinamese parents. Her father Max Essed was a pediatrician. She spent half of her childhood in Suriname and the Netherlands, and since 1969 in Nijmegen . In 1983 she completed her studies in cultural anthropology at the University of Amsterdam, and in 1990 received her doctorate there in the field of social sciences.
Life
Essed is known for her research into everyday racism in Western Europe and her theoretical work on Everyday Racism ( Alledaags racisme ). She participated in the research project “ Racism at the Top ” of the Austrian Ministry of Science and Transport. Under the direction of Ruth Wodak ( University of Vienna ) and Teun A. van Dijk , she examined the role of political elites in the emergence and reproduction of racism and anti-racism using discourse analysis . Seven Western European countries were examined.
