Phoenix is a place in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . He is part of the metropolitan municipality eThekwini .
geography
In 2011, Phoenix had 176,989 residents. Phoenix is 85% inhabited by Indians . After Durban in the southeast and is 20 kilometers. To the west lies Inanda , northeast Verulam , southeast Umhlanga and southwest KwaMashu , all localities of eThekwini.
history
Phoenix was created as a settlement for workers on a sugar cane farm . In 1904 Mahatma Gandhi, who had lived in Durban since 1893, founded the Phoenix Settlement, a village-like settlement on the northwestern edge of Inanda near the border with today's Phoenix , from which Gandhi directed his movement of Satyagraha .
With the Group Areas Act coming into force , Phoenix was reserved for Indians. In 1976 Phoenix was proclaimed a township .
Economy and Transport
Phoenix Industrial is a large industrial park in the southwest. The beverage manufacturer SABMiller , among others, produces there .
The Motorways M25, M26 and M41 close to Phoenix to the road network. The M26 runs roughly semicircularly as a Phoenix Highway through the town. Phoenix is served by the Northern Coast Line of the Durban Metrorail .
