Phyllium bilobatum is an insect art from the family of wanderers sheets (Phylliidae).

Systematics

The species is assigned to the subgenus Phyllium , which is to be distinguished from the second subgenus Pulchriphyllium within the genus Phyllium . The holotype is a female animal from the Philippines, which is kept in the Natural History Museum in London .
In a more recent work it is proposed to divide the genus Phyllium into species groups below the subgenera. Phyllium bilobatum is here in after siccifolium phyllium named siccifolium group of species classified.

features

The females reach a body length between 67 and 74 millimeters, the males remain significantly smaller with 44 to 51 millimeters. Due to the large area of distribution, different local forms occur, which can differ in size and body shape. Females with conspicuous lobes (praises) at the edge of the seventh and eighth abdominal segments are described from the Philippines , but also those without praise from Malaysia . To ensure a better description of the local forms, the species name is often given together with the origin (if known) (for example: Phyllium bilobatum (Malaysia)). In their habitus the species is similar to the other representatives of the siccifolium species group. The adult females of Phyllium bilobatum (Malaysia) have a bruise on the posterior attachment of the middle and rear hips ( coxes ). Other representatives of the siccifolium species group often show different colored drawings here. The females of Phyllium philippinicum bear brown markings in these areas, those of Phyllium mabantai yellow-brown and those of Phyllium jacobsoni white. The eggs of these species are also quite similar. The eggs of Phyllium bilobatum , about five millimeters long and three millimeters wide, have three longitudinal furrows on the flat sides, while those of Phyllium philippinicum have irregularly arranged round pits.

Occurrence and behavior

Phyllium bilobatum is found in Malaysia, the Philippines and the island of Java . The animals originating from Java are smaller, their females only reach 61 to 69 millimeters in length. Both sexes possess functional defensive glands, from which especially the males when touched by stigmenähnliche openings in the pronotum an unpleasant-smelling defensive secretions spatter. Young nymphs like to hide in withered leaves, which at this stage are more similar in color than green foliage.

Terrarium keeping

In Phyllium bilobatum is one of the most sensitive representatives currently in terrarium neat Faering leaves. A uniformly humid climate is recommended. According to Detlef Großer (verbal communication), the subadult females in particular are very susceptible before the last moult and die for no apparent reason, while the males grow up relatively easily under the keeping conditions that are common for walking leaves (see keeping walking leaves in a terrarium ). The leaves of blackberries , oaks or better guavas ( psidium ) are recommended as food .
