Phyllodoce empetriformis is a species of the genus moss Heiden ( Phyllodoce ) within the family of Ericaceae (Ericaceae). It is distributed in western North America, where it is English pink mountain-heather or pink mountain heath- called.

Vegetative characteristics

Phyllodoce empetriformis is a low-growing, evergreen dwarf shrub . The distinctive leaves are rolled up in such a way that they resemble conifer needles.

Generative characteristics

Phyllodoce empetriformis produces attractive pink to purple or purple flowers at the end of the stem axes in leaf axils. The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope . The sepals and stamens are glabrous or sparsely hairy, while in Phyllodoce glanduliflora they are each tomentose.

Similar species

The flowers of the related Phyllodoce glanduliflora are yellow or green-white in comparison. In Phyllodoce empetriformis the bell flower-like corolla is twice as long as the calyx (during Phyllodoce gladuliflora an almost twice as long corolla as calyx which the urn is also shaped).

Occurrence

Phyllodoce empetriformis is found in mountainous regions of western North America in the United States and Canada . The distribution area extends in the south to the Klamath Mountains in northern California and Oregon .

This dwarf shrub, which is common in its native bioregion, thrives in the Alpine region .
