description

The nature reserve is located south of Oldenburg . It stretches along the Lethe a little above the crossing through the state road 871 between Garrel and Großenkneten up to its confluence with the Osternburg Canal near Oldenburg and includes the course of the river with the adjacent strips of water as well as areas bordering it in places. To restore the continuity of the flowing water, existing weirs such as the mill weir at the Wardenburg watermill were replaced by Sohlgleiten . As part of renaturation measures, gravel banks were created as spawning and growing habitats for gravel-spawning fish species. At Halenhorst, a natural course of the Lethe was restored and the previous, straightened course of the river closed.

The Lethe flows at the start of the reserve initially many wooded areas with riparian forest character before their lowland predominantly agricultural as grassland or arable is used. Large sections of the Lethe have been straightened, but in sections it is also very close to nature, for example with different bed structures . Flooding aquatic vegetation settles in the Lethe. The buffer strips are partially moist Hochstaudenfluren , reeds taken and Sauergras-, Binsen- and perennials vineyards. Here, for example, move meadowsweet , valerian , Epilobium hirsutum , purple loosestrife , Wasserdost and reed canary grass . In a still water in the nature reserve , spawnweed and frog-bite communities settle with Alpine spawns , water cockfoot , eared milfoil and water feathers . Furthermore, the nature reserve houses u. a. Alternate flowered milfoil , flexible luster algae , common water hose , simple hedgehog cob , water star , dragon arum , marsh marigold , marsh sword lily , brook spring herb and shore wolf snake .

The Lethe is a walking corridor and habitat for river and brook lamprey , but the sea trout is also at home again. The Lethe is also home to asp , moderlieschen , wolffish and crucian carp , pea clams , various caddis flies and dragonflies , including banded demoiselle , common darter , blood-red darter , swamp heather dragonfly and common rush damsel .
