[pi!] is a rock band from Dresden .

history

The founding date of the band is not known, but the date of their re-establishment with the also regionally known singer / songwriter Rany Dabbagh on March 1, 2008 is generally given. In the previous line-up with singer and front woman Claudia Gehre, [pi!] Were already on concert tour with the Berlin scene great Knorkator and had released two short and demo albums before the singer and band joined forces after the release ceremony of the second album ampivalence! in the Dresden Club Pushkin with over 1000 visitors in June 2007.

On February 27, 2009, [pi!] Was named “Best Newcomer 2009” by the Dresden city magazine at the release party for the Sound of Dresden sampler . The band then published a message on their website that they would record their first full studio album with the Berlin producers Nicolaj Gogow and Tim Schallenberg from summer 2009. A first sample of this work was published in November 2009 as ePI II .

In the spring of 2010, the band caused a stir across Germany for the first time when they came third in the Köstritzer Echolot , a nationwide competition with over 1000 applicant bands in Berlin, and was the only non-Berlin band to achieve a top 3 place.

In June 2010 [pi!] Played for the EM semifinal game on Germany's largest stage, the Berlin Fan Mile , which subsequently helped them to get a record deal with the Berlin label MaM Records .

The band had a success with their participation in the Saxon Media Academy in 2010 , in which they shot the first professional music video for the song Miserabella together with other young people . In 2011 singer Rany Dabbagh and guitarist Maximilian Rothe visited the academy.

In February of the following year they won the Germany-wide “ Myspace / O2 / HTC Uni-Band-Battle” as Germany's best university band and announced their first official album, A Perfect Beginning , which was released on June 24, 2011. The first single for the album, Radio , was released on March 18, 2011, and the video for the single reached number 2 on the MyVideo rock charts. The video for the follow-up single "Overcome" was released on May 30, 2011. One day after the premiere on MyVideo, the video reached number 1 in both the rock and pop charts.

On June 3rd and 4th, 2011 [pi!] Opened the AlternaStage at Europe's biggest festivals Rock im Park and Rock am Ring .

At the beginning of December 2011, [pi!] Split from lead singer Rany Dabbagh. The reason given was disagreement within the band. The successor to Dabbagh was decided in early 2012; the new singer is Christoph Meißelbach .

style

The band describes their style as "Real Alternative". This is supposed to indicate the inappropriateness of the band's sound, which is generally in alternative rock , but sees itself as an alternative to the conventional sound of other bands in this genre, because it borrows from pop music, post-grunge and stylistic devices from the singer-songwriter area used to generate a scene-typical sound spectrum.
