Piatnitzkysaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur from the Central Jurassic ( Callovium ) of South America.
So far, parts of two partially preserved skulls with associated skeletal parts have been found in the Cañadón-Asfalto formation in the Argentine province of Chubut . Paleontologists are still debating how to classify it. Anatomically it seems to be close to Allosaurus , even if the base of the skull shows differences.
Was named piatnitzkysaurus by Alejandro Piatnitzky and Miguel Flores, two Argentine geologists. A replica of the skeleton of this theropod is on display in the Natural Science Museum Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia in Buenos Aires .
features
The 4.3-meter-long bipedan was built very much like Allosaurus , but his arms were longer and unusually strong. The weight of Piatnitzkysaurus is estimated at 275 kg. The meat eater's sturdy head was about 50 cm long with long, conical teeth. Two bone ridges ran from the eyes to the tip of the snout. He had long claws on his fingers. The stocky body ended in a stiff tail.
