Picea crassifolia Kom. Is a species fromthe pine family (Pinaceae). It is native to northern China.

Picea crassifolia grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 25 meters and diameters of up to 60 centimeters at chest height . The hairy or hairless bark of the branches is initially greenish yellow and turns light purple to brownish yellow over time. In the second year it is mostly blue-green, rarely yellow.

The cone-shaped winter buds are usually not resinous. The strong needles are 1.2 to 3.5 inches long and 0.2 to 0.3 inches wide. They have a square cross-section. Their tip is blunt or prickly. There are five to seven stomatal lines on the top of the needle and four to six on the bottom .

Picea crassifolia is monoecious-segregated ( monözisch ) and the flowering period extends from April to May. The cones are cylindrical with a length of 7 to 11 centimeters and a thickness of 2 to 3.5 centimeters and ripen from September to October. The seed scales are obovate and about 1.8 inches long and about 1.5 inches wide. Their margins are whole and slightly wavy. The obovate seeds are about 3.5 millimeters long and have wings that are about 9 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Picea crassifolia is in China. It includes there the in the Inner Mongolia location Helan Mountains and the Daqing Shan , the provinces of Gansu and Ningxia , as well as in the northeastern Qinghai located Qilian Mountains and the area around the Qinghai Lake .

Picea crassifolia thrives at altitudes from 1600 to 3800 meters.

Picea crassifolia is classified as "not endangered" in the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary.

Systematics

Picea crassifolia is assigned to the subgenus Picea , the section Picea , the subsection Picea and the series Asperatae within the genus of the spruce trees ( Picea ) .

It was first described as Picea crassifolia in 1923 by Wladimir Leontjewitsch Komarow in Botanicheskie Materialy Gerbariia Glavnogo Botanicheskogo Sada SSSR , Volume 4 (23-24), pages 177-178.
