Picnomon acarna is the only species of the Picnomon genusin the Asteraceae family.

Picnomon acarna is an annual stem therophyte that reaches heights of 20 to 70 centimeters. The leaves are gray, spiderweb-like, tomentose, and have strong, yellow thorns on the edge and between them shorter, finer thorns. The flower heads are arranged in dense clusters or individually. The upper leaves envelop and tower over them. The bracts are 22 to 30 millimeters long and have a bent back and pinnate end spine. The flowers are purple or whitish in color. The fruits are shiny brown, 5 to 6 millimeters long and compressed. The pappus is 14 to 19 millimeters long and feathery.

The flowering period extends from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

Occurrence

Picnomon acarna occurs in the Mediterranean area. In Crete, the species grows on ruderal sites, cultivated and fallow land, overgrazed Phrygana and hedgehog cushion heaths at altitudes from 0 to 2150 meters.
