Piero Nelli (born April 14, 1926 in Pisa , † June 28, 2014 in Sarteano ) was an Italian documentary filmmaker and film director .

Life

Nelli was already working with Giuseppe De Santis in the late 1940s and published his first independent documentary in 1950, which was regularly followed by numerous other works until 1967 and occasionally until 1989. They often received a lot of attention and were classified as important, Mauthausen warns! , A working day or Labanta negro , which was awarded the “Premio San Marco” at the Venice Film Festival in 1966 . In 1952 Nelli made his debut in the feature film sector with La pattuglia sperduta , which was created according to his own script , in which he staged historical material using neorealism and with amateur actors without much regard for cinematic or declamatory conventions. In the 1960s he participated in some episodic films (one shot for Le italiane e l'amore in 1961 was not used in the film) and from 1967 worked almost exclusively for television; Here, too, he shot important films such as Lo sconosciuto , Il cappello nero , Il guardino notturno or Rossa e il mago . These have twice been shown on the screens of Italian cinemas; it ran La Fabbrica del uomo on the Film Festival of Trieste . His work, which is shaped by social and historical interest, also includes series on languages ​​and dialects of his homeland, as well as the remarkable Il passatore .

In 1963 Nelli founded the production company "Reiac" with Ansano Giannarelli , with which they promoted documentaries, industrial films and television works.

In 2000 the novel Un caso di destino was published , which was positively received by readers and critics.

So far, Nelli has not received the critical and historical attention and reception his oeuvre deserves.
