Pierre-Antoine Lebrun (born November 29, 1785 in Paris ; † May 27, 1873 there ) was a French poet.

Life

In 1805, Lebrun was able to inspire Napoléon Bonaparte with his epic poem Ode à la grande armée , that the latter granted him an annual honorary salary (1,200 francs ) for life. Two years later, on the basis of his Ode sur la campagne de 1807 , Lebrun got a job as a tax collector.

Due to the political turmoil of the time, Lebrun later lost this benefice through the Restoration and after the publication of his poem Sur la mort de Napoléon , the payment of his honorary salary was stopped.

Enthusiastic and influenced by the works of Friedrich Schiller , Lebrun wrote his Marie Stuart as early as 1820 . Of the plays, this tragedy is considered one of his most important pieces; a skilful mixture of interpretation and free translation.

Lebrun later made several trips to and through Italy and Greece . One of his most important publications from this period was his poem Voyage en Grèce in 1828 . For this he was accepted into the Académie française as an immortal in the same year (Fauteuil 28).

After the July Revolution in 1830, Lebrun was entrusted with the management of the royal printing works , the "Imprimerie Royale". In 1839 he was appointed peer of France . In 1844 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

After the suppression of the February Revolution , Lebrun resigned from all his offices and retired into private life. The appointment as Senator in 1853 was not associated with any obligations and 15 years later he was appointed Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor . As such, Pierre-Antoine Lebrun died at the age of 87 on May 27, 1873 in Paris.
