Pierre Barlaguet (born October 18, 1931 in Calvisson ; † October 16, 2018 ) was a French football player and coach who spent most of his career at Olympique Nîmes .

Player career

The 166 centimeter tall Barlaguet, who was called up in both defensive midfield and central defense, was in the squad of the first division club Olympique Nîmes from 1953. At a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, he had to wait some time for his first appearance and made his debut in the OGC Nice on October 8, 1953, shortly before his 22nd birthday in a game against OGC Nice highest French league. Subsequently, he became a regular player and was able to maintain this regular position for the following years. In 1956 he achieved his first title win at national level by winning the national cup competition for the Coupe Charles Drago . From 1958 to 1960 he belonged with Nîmes to the circle of the top teams of the league and took second place in the table three times in a row, which was equal to the runner-up. In addition, the team made it into the national cup final in 1958 , which was lost 3-1 to Stade Reims . The leap into the national cup final in 1961 also succeeded ; in his second final Barlaguet ran on as captain, but missed the title again with a 1: 3 against the UA Sedan-Torcy .

Despite his role as team captain at a club that was among the best in the country around 1960, Barlaguet was denied entry into the French senior team . However, he wore the jersey of France's B selection four times. In the early 1960s, he was still an integral part of the team and saw their slow slide from the top of the table. After a number of seasons as the undisputed regular player, he was completely ousted from the first team at the beginning of 1964/65 and should henceforth play for the club's reserve team. When Nîmes fought in a relegation round in 1965 against falling into the second division, he was brought back to the team, made his contribution to averting relegation and was allowed to remain in the first team. In 1966, the then 34-year-old decided after 13 years with 370 top division games and 18 goals to end his active career and switch to the coaching profession. Apart from winning the Coupe Charles Drago, despite two second places in the cup and three second places in the league, he never won a title.

Coaching career

A few months after his last appearances as a player, Barlaguet took up his position as coach on July 18, 1966 at an amateur club from Mazamet . He remained loyal to this until 1969 and then worked from 1969 to 1973 for SO Châtellerault, who also played lower class . From 1973 he coached the players of the training club INF Vichy before he went to the second division FC Bourges in 1976 , which brought his return to professional football with it. With the descent in 1977 followed the descent from the professional area, Barlaguet was still allowed to keep his job and stayed in Bourges until 1978.

In 1978 he returned to Nîmes after twelve years, where he was responsible for training young players alongside Jean Victor Bandera . When the previous head coach Henri Noël was poached by FC Martigues in 1982 , Barlaguet rose to coach the second division team. In 1983 he led the team to promotion, which was followed by direct relegation a year later and his release on August 22, 1984. Then he was responsible for the youth at local rivals Olympique Alès until he was brought back to Nîmes in 1990 to assist the Argentine Daniel Romeo as an assistant coach. In December 1994 he took over the responsibility as head coach for the second time, but could not avert relegation to the third division in 1995. Nevertheless, he stayed in office and experienced a year that on the one hand almost meant relegation and on the other hand brought the club to the national cup final in 1996 . Thus, he was in the cup final for the third time with Nîmes, which also represented the club's third final, but failed due to a 2-1 defeat against AJ Auxerre for the third time due to a possible win of the trophy. In June 1996, the then 64-year-old retired as a coach.
