Dr. Temperance Brennan must examine the bodies of several infants discovered in a prostitute's home. Since it is believed that the prostitute - Annaliese Ruben - has been killing her children right after their birth for years, Brennan travels to Edmonton with her ex-boyfriend Detective Andrew Ryan and Mountie Sergeant Oliver Hasty to investigate Rubens' former apartment . While the three actually discover another dead baby there, Ruben is spotted in Yellowknife . Once there, Brennan manages to track down the mentally retarded Ruben, but before she can be arrested, she is shot. The police quickly attribute her death to her involvement in the drug scene, but Temperance Brennan finally succeeds in uncovering the true background of the crime: Years ago Rubens' father acquired the mining rights for several diamond-rich properties. Funding was not possible at the time, but the land is now worth several million dollars. Competing diamond prospectors tried to persuade Rubens 'sister - who knows nothing of the real value of the property - to give them the mining rights and saw their plan in trouble with Rubens' surprise return. With Brennan's help, the murderers can be arrested, and Ruben's sister can look forward to a bright future.
