Dr. Temperance "Tempe" Brennan must investigate the basement of a newly sold home in Charlotte, North Carolina where a plumber discovered a hidden basement room. This basement contains a plethora of occult objects, including a skeletonized skull and thigh bones of a young woman. Shortly after their recovery, a headless torso of a young man is found at Lake Wylie , with satanic marks carved into him. A Christian fundamentalist County Commissioner (comparable to a district administrator in Germany) tries to exploit the situation politically and polemics in the media against sects and dissenters. Brennan is drawn into a media smear campaign by her participation in the investigation.
