Dr. Temperance "Tempe" Brennan takes on the task of leading an archaeological excavation seminar on Dewees Island , an island in the north of Charleston, South Carolina . While she and the students excavate prehistoric graves of natives, they come across a more recent skeletonized corpse. Further corpse finds bring Dr. Brennan, her husband Pete and their life partner Detective Andrew Ryan on the trail of a serial killer who operates from a free church-run ambulance.
