The discovery of a body in a garbage dump near Charlotte Motor Speedway prompted Dr. Temperance Brennan to reopen an investigation into an unsolved case over a decade old. At that time, a young couple who had connections to the "Patriot Posse", a right-wing extremist association , had disappeared . Together with Detective Erskine "Skinny" Slidell and ex-cop Cotton Galimore, who was working on the case at the time, she tries to find out what happened back then. While she has to deal privately with her ex Pete and his fiancé Summer, the investigation is repeatedly hampered by uncooperative FBI officers.
