Life

Kathy Reichs at a book signing, November 2010

Kathy Reichs grew up in Chicago with three sisters. Her mother was a musician in the city's symphony orchestra, her father managing director.

Empire lives in Charlotte ( North Carolina ) and Montreal ( Canada ). Among other things, she studied archeology and is now one of only 88 forensic anthropologists approved by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology . She works for the Office of the Medical Examiner in North Carolina and for the Laboratoire de Sciences Judiciaires et de Médecine Légale in Montréal. She is also a professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte worked and lectured at the Academy of the FBI in Quantico ( Virginia ). Reichs has published numerous scientific papers.

As a member of a state disaster task force, she was involved in identifying the victims of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. On behalf of the United Nations , she also helped to clarify the identity of bodies exhumed from mass graves in Rwanda and Guatemala .

In 1997, Reich's first crime novel Déjà Dead appeared , which was not published in German translation the following year under the title Dead lies . For this work, the author received the " Arthur Ellis Award " from the Crime Writers of Canada in 1998 for best first publication.

Reichs keeps her private life largely secret from the public. At the age of 19 she married the examining magistrate Paul Reichs in 1968, with whom she has two daughters and a son.

The character Temperance Brennan

The Temperance Brennan Novels

Reichs has incorporated her professional experience into a number of internationally successful crime novels . In her books, the first-person narrator , a forensic anthropologist named Dr. Temperance "Tempe" Brennan , complicated murders. The early to mid-40s is in mortal danger again and again. Just like the author herself, the fictional character constantly commutes between North Carolina and Québec. She also works at the same institutes as her creator. Reichs emphasizes, however, that despite many similarities , Temperance Brennan should not be regarded as her alter ego .

The minor characters that recur in Reich's stories include Dr. Brennan's daughter Katy , her sister Harriet ("Harry") and her husband Pete , from whom she has been separated for several years. The heroine of the novel is sometimes more, sometimes less closely connected with the attractive Canadian Lieutenant-Détective Andrew Ryan . She often has a tense relationship with her male colleagues and superiors. Above all, the Canadian police investigator Luc Claudel , who is skeptical of the scientific methods of crime investigation , repeatedly manages to incur the wrath of the heroine.

The cases that Temperance Brennan has to deal with in the novels , which are mainly based on Reich's professional practice , are primarily characterized by particularly gruesome murders. Occasionally even small children are among the victims, who have been trimmed beyond recognition, of which mostly only individual body parts are found. The perpetrators are often psychopaths who act for no reason or as part of obscure rituals .

In addition, Dr. Brennan occasionally on archaeological bone finds. This is especially true for the 2005 published novel thought dead live longer , which with clear parallels to Dan Brown's bestseller The Da Vinci Code a special position occupied within Empire novels and heroine on the trail of a 2,000 year-old mystery of Israel leads. This novel also refers to the theses that James Tabor thematized in his work "The Jesus Dynasty".

The forensic medical examinations are described in detail and scientifically sober by Reichs. Since some of the stories take place in the French-speaking part of Canada, the author often uses individual French expressions or sentences. This also applies to many of the titles of her novels.

Temperance Brennan as a television character

On September 13, 2005, the US television station FOX started the television series " Bones - Die Bonejägerin " ( English original title: Bones ), which is produced in collaboration with Kathy Reichs. It is not a film adaptation of her novels. The series shows parallels in terms of content and form to the US television series " CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators ".

Only a few motifs were taken from the book, including the character of Dr. Temperance Brennan (portrayed by US actress Emily Deschanel ). Brennan, nicknamed Bones , works in the series for a laboratory at the Jeffersonian Institution . She is part of a six-person team of investigators.

The main character of the series is not only significantly younger than the Dr. Brennan in Reich's books, but also shows many character and biographical differences from her. However, what it has in common with its creator is that she writes novels in her free time. Heroine of her books: A forensic anthropologist named Kathy Reichs . Reality and literary levels are completely mixed in that Reichs (as a character in the series created by Brennan) has a partner by her side called "Andy" (Lieutenant-Détective Andrew Ryan from the novels of the "real" Kathy Reichs).
