life and work

Pierre Eugène Grandsire was a student of the painters Jules Noël and Jules Dupré . Around 1852 he went on a study trip to Venice. Further trips later took him to Austria, Flanders and Spain. His favorite subjects were mainly romantic forest landscapes and views of port cities, whereby he repeatedly chose motifs from the countries he visited - for example Venice. In France he painted views of the surroundings of Paris, the Vosges , Brittany and Normandy . The writer George Sand in Promendes near the village praised his pictures from the Creuse valley . Typical for the works of Grandsire are effective lighting, which was very well received by his contemporaries. From 1850 he exhibited regularly in the Salon de Paris and received bronze medals for his works at the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1889 and Paris in 1900 . In addition to paintings, Grandsire created watercolors, pastels and drawings. Many of his illustrations have appeared in magazines such as Le Magasin pittoresque, Le Monde illustré, Le Tour du Monde and L'Illustration . In Paris he lived for many years on Quai Voltaire in house number 25.
