Pierre Haubensak (born June 19, 1935 in Brünig on the Brünig Pass , municipality of Meiringen ) is a Swiss painter, draftsman and printmaker.

Artistic career

Pierre Haubensak grew up as a child of hoteliers in central and western Switzerland. From 1942 to 1951 he attended primary school in Meiringen. This was followed by training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva (1951–1952) and at the Basel School of Applied Arts (1952–1958). Haubensak then lived and worked for a long time in Paris (1958–1960), Ibiza (1961–1969) and New York (1969–1977) and in 1977 returned to Zurich, Switzerland. His artistic work is influenced by color field painting and hard edge painting . The first group of works Doors of Perception (1968–1974) consists of panels that evoke a meditative quality. This was followed by more expressive pictures with intense colors in the 1980s. In an intermediate phase, Haubensak renounced the abstract division of his pictures and concentrated on depictions of landscapes until he took up and further developed the principle of evenly dividing the picture surface with his group of works Tetras (from 1988). This also includes the wall friezes in the reading room of the Zurich Central Library . In order to be able to fulfill the requirement that the wall friezes also have to have a sound-absorbing function, Haubensak resorted to a technique with strongly thinned acrylic , which he had already practiced in his time in New York.
