Pietà (17th century, Klausen)
The group of sculptures with a Pietà and other figures in the Catholic pilgrimage church of the Visitation of Mary in Klausen , a local community in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was created at the beginning of the 17th century.
The group is the younger of two miraculous images from the pilgrimage church. It is a 1.15 meter high sandstone sculpture that has been recast . The Pietà with the figures of St. Mary Magdalene and the Apostle John is a so-called extended Vesper picture.
Ernst Wackenroder wrote in 1934:
“... built in an oblique line from bottom left to top right with the arms of St. Johannes as a heightened conclusion. The already tearful faces are turned to the left, all of which can be seen at a glance. The fabrics in strong, somewhat petty creases. The well-sculpted, muscular body of Christ faces forward and is only touched lightly by both women. "
