Pieter Jan Remees Modderman (born March 10, 1919 in Tanah Radja , Sumatra , † April 18, 2005 in Arnhem ) was a Dutch prehistoric archaeologist who particularly distinguished himself in the research of the Early Neolithic .

Life

Modderman was born in Tanah Radja on the island of Sumatra (Indonesia), which was then a Dutch colony. He received his doctorate in 1945 from the University of Groningen under van Giffen . He worked as the curator of the Rijksdienst voor het Oudheidkundig Bodemonderzoek (ROB) in Amersfoort from 1961 and then became a private lecturer in prehistory at the University of Utrecht until he was appointed professor at the University of Leiden , where he was also dean. He retired in 1982.

research

The main area of ​​work of Pieter Modderman was the early Neolithic of Central Europe. He excavated numerous LBK settlements in the south Limburg loess area and laid the foundations for ceramic chronology. His typology of band ceramic houses has been expanded several times, including by Detlev von Brandt , but still forms the basis of every address. In 1970 Modderman coined the term Limburg Group ; today also called the Rhine-Maas-Scheldt Mesolithic .
