Pieter Wilhelmus Scharroo (born September 16, 1883 in The Hague ; † August 19, 1963 ibid) was Dutch commander- in -chief in the battle for the Maasbrücken in Rotterdam after the German invasion from May 10, 1940. While he was on May 14 about the surrender the city negotiated, the Rotterdam Blitz took place.

Life

After studying at the Koninklijke Militaire Academie (KMA) in Breda , he was an officer in the pioneer troops and teacher of hydraulic engineering at the KMA from 1904 to 1940 . His career also took him to the Dutch East Indies ( KNIL ). He was involved in the construction of the Olympic Stadium and the organization of the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam and was a long-time member of the IOC .

After his retirement he worked as an independent consultant for construction and hydraulic engineering. His grave is in the Dutch cemetery Oud Eik en Duinen in The Hague .
