Erica Terpstra (born May 26, 1943 in The Hague ) is a former Dutch swimmer , state secretary and member of parliament. From the end of 2003 to May 2010 she was chairwoman of the Dutch sports association NOC * NSF .

Life

Terpstra was one of the most successful swimmers in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 1960s. Her strongest route was the 100 m freestyle . Terpstra took part in two Olympic Games, in 1960 in Rome and 1964 in Tokyo . In Tokyo, she won the silver medal behind the USA with the Dutch 4 × 100 m individual relay relay , and the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. In 1962 she had already become European champion with the freestyle relay in Leipzig . There are also several national championship titles.

After her time as an active athlete, Terpstra started working as a teacher and gave Dutch lessons to Chinese in the Netherlands . She later worked as a sports journalist.

In 1977 Terpstra was elected to the Dutch parliament through an overhang mandate for the liberal VVD . With a break of four years between 1994 and 1998, when the Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok appointed her to his cabinet as State Secretary for Public Welfare, Health and Sport, she sat in the Second Chamber of Parliament until December 15, 2003. When she left, Terpstra was the longest-serving MP. She was elected with a large number of preferential votes from election to election, with around 311,000 in the 1994 election.

On October 21, 2003, Terpstra was elected chairman of the Dutch governing body for sport, NOC * NSF . In the vote, she prevailed against the government proposed competitor Ruud Vreeman . Terpstra stepped down from this role in May 2010. André Bolhuis became her successor.
