Pietro Antonio Trezzini ( Russian Пьетро Антонио Трезини * 26. September 1692 in Astano , Ticino , † after 1760 ) was a Swiss architect of the Baroque in Saint Petersburg .

Life

Pietro Trezzini, son of a builder , learned in Italy and worked on large construction sites in Milan under the direction of his father.

In 1726 Trezzini went to Saint Petersburg, where he initially worked for private clients. 1731–1732 he carried out stucco and stone work for the building of the 12 colleges , which was planned and built by Domenico Trezzini , with whom he was largely related, and Leonard Theodor Schwertfeger . In 1735 he was commissioned to rebuild the burned-out St. Isaac's Cathedral . On the site of the later Prince Vladimir Cathedral, Trezzini built the Uspensky Cathedral with Mikhail Grigoryevich Semzow from 1740 to 1747.

In 1742, Trezzini became the architect of the St. Petersburg police chief's office to monitor private buildings as part of the urban development plan. He was also busy expanding the post office and the customs and horse stables. From 1742 to 1751 Trezzini directed the expansion of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery .

In 1743 Trezzini took over the construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral according to the plans of the recently deceased Semzow. In 1745 Empress Elisabeth instructed him to use Moscow's Uspensky Cathedral as a model, so that the first five-domed church in Saint Petersburg was built. Construction was completed in 1754. The church burned down in 1825 and was rebuilt in a classical style by Vasily Petrovich Stasov .

Sergius Monastery by the Sea, Strelna ( Ferdinand Perrot )

In 1746, Trezzini developed the project to build the Sergius Convent by the Sea in Strelna as a square complex with the five-domed cathedral in the center with a bell tower and residential buildings to the north and south of the cathedral. It was built in 1756–1760 by Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli . He also built two houses for the Catholic St. Catherine Church .

Clement Church, Moscow

When Trezzini's competitor Rastrelli became more successful and Empress Elisabeth Trezzini failed to meet demands, Trezzini traveled back to Italy in 1755 and worked at the court of the Duke of Milan. In 1760 Trezzini lived again in Saint Petersburg. He was no longer in the civil service and worked for private clients. He is also credited with the project to build the Moscow Clement Church , which Alexei Petrovich Jewlaschew's student Ivan Jakowlewitsch Jakowlew completed in the 1760s. However, Alexei Petrovich Jewlaschew was also named as the author of this project.
