Pilophorus clavatus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The ant-like bugs are 4.0 to 5.0 millimeters long. With them, the rear silvery-white band on the hemielytres, unlike some other species of the genus Pilophorus, is not continuous and shifted slightly forward so that it runs over the clavus. The pronotum and the hemielytras are covered with fine hairs. Another characteristic of the species is that the second part of the antennae becomes thicker towards the front. The third link is lightly colored on the basal half, the fourth only on the base. The second link is 1.5 to 1.7 times as long as the head is wide.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed holarctic . It occurs everywhere in Europe, with the exception of the far north and the south, and occurs eastward to Central Asia and northern China. It is widespread and not uncommon in Germany and Austria.
Deciduous trees, in particular willows ( Salix ), but also oaks ( Quercus ), poplars ( Populus ), linden ( Tilia ), birch ( Betula ), alder ( Alnus ), hazel ( Corylus ) and woody rose plants are populated . They can also be found in gardens on currants ( Ribes ) and rarely even on conifers.
Way of life
Pilophorus clavatus prey on aphids , but also on the juice of their host plants. They often appear together with ants, especially garden ants ( Lasius ). Adults can be observed from late June / early July to September. The mating season is from late July to early August.
