Pilosocereus royenii is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

Pilosocereus royenii grows tree-shaped with an often clearly defined trunk and with upright or sometimes ascending, strong, blue-green shoots 7 to 9 centimeters in diameter that are branched at the base or above and reach heights of 2 to 8 meters. There are 6 to 11 ribs. The yellowish to reddish thorns are designed differently. The 1 to 6 central spines are 3.2 to 6 inches long. The approximately 9 radial spines are 1.9 to 2.6 inches long. The flowering part of the shoots is not clearly defined. It comprises 1 to 3 ribs at the tip or on the sides, from whose areoles long, white hairs arise.

The more or less pink flowers are up to 5 centimeters long and 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits contain a white pulp.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus royenii is found on the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula , the Bahamas , the Dominican Republic , Jamaica , Puerto Rico , Tobago , the US Virgin Islands, and the Lesser Antilles . It is one of the most common species of cactus in the Caribbean .

The first description as Cactus royenii was published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . Ronald Stewart Byles and Gordon Douglas Rowley placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1957 . A synonym is Cephalocereus royeni (L.) Britton & Rose .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
