Pinacol (from the Greek pinákion , ' little tablet'), formerly also called pinacon , is an organic compound from the group of alkanediols . The two hydroxyl groups are in the pinacol on adjacent carbon atoms (in a vicinal position ). Pinacols can be produced from ketones or aldehydes by a pinacol coupling reaction, with radical anions occurring as intermediates.

Pinacole

Starting from the pinacol, compounds with the structure R 1 R 2 C (OH) C (OH) R 3 R 4 (with the radicals R 1 - R 4 , where the two OH groups are on adjacent carbon atoms) are generally referred to as pinacols ( substituted 1,2- diols ). Pinacols can undergo acid-catalyzed pinacol rearrangements to pinacolones.

Examples of derived connections:

use

Pinacol is used as:

  • Intermediate product for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals (e.g. 2-aminophenylboronic acid pinacol ester)
  • Intermediate product for the production of pinacolone
