Pincevent
The prehistoric site of Pincevent is located south of the Seine in the south of La Grande-Paroisse , between Moret-sur-Loing and Montereau-Fault-Yonne in the Seine-et-Marne department in France . Their discovery in 1964 and its excavation under the direction of André Leroi-Gourhan yielded remains of about 12,300 years old stock of reindeer hunters of the Magdalenian . It led to significant advances in the knowledge of the Magdalenian, which otherwise became known more from cave sites .

Story of discovery
The Pincevent site is located in a gravel pit that has been in operation since 1926 . From 1956 a burial ground from the 5th century was discovered there by chance . Ten or eleven probably Neolithic finds as well as Gallo-Roman buildings, a cemetery and finds from Magdalenian were destroyed between 1956 and 1964. Isabelle Roux-Rath , a specialist in palaeoclimatology from Grande-Paroisse, alerted the Center for Prehistoric Research at the University of Paris , which initially intervened as part of rescue excavations by Leroi-Gourhan. Given the interest and expansion of the site, the land has been acquired by the state and protective measures have been taken. The excavations could continue under these conditions until 1985.
The site has been protected as a Monument historique since 1988 .
Results
Pincevent was inhabited from early summer to early winter around 12,300 years ago. Its inhabitants hunted reindeer, caught fish and collected eggs. The spatial arrangement of the remains of stone and bones and fireplaces was preserved by the fine silt of the Seine.
The excavation has indicated circular areas likely to correspond to the locations of tents. The residents apparently lived in tents, similar to Indian tipis , which were covered with fur. Study of reindeer bones shows that whole animals were brought into the camp before they were divided between people.
Pincevent also plays a role in improving excavation methods. After the work of G. Laplace and L. Meroc in the Pyrenees, Leroi-Gourhan formalized systematic records of all objects, traces, macro and micro structures found with the aim of positioning them precisely in a three-dimensional space.
