Pine Hill is a village in Ulster County in the US state of New York with 308 inhabitants (as of 2000) and is located in a popular ski area. The place belongs to the community Shandaken , which is 10 km west.

geography

The location is in the Catskill Mountains , within Catskill State Park on Route 28, and is approximately 180 km northwest of New York City and approximately 95 km southwest of Schenectady . It consists of the center of the village, which lies in the valley at the level of old Route 28, and individual houses that run up the mountain along Birch Creek Road.

history

The settlement Pine Hill emerged in the late 17th century, but the village did not grow until after 1872, when the Ulster and Delaware Railroad moved their railroad tracks there and opened a train station. During the tourist boom in the last century there were around 20 accommodation establishments in Pine Hill, which catered for ski guests, especially in the winter season. Today only three hotels are still in operation. Between 1896 and 1986 the village was an independent municipality.

  • Morton Memorial Library: Founded in 1903, the library is an important social meeting place for the village, providing residents not only with access to the latest books and magazines, but also to the Internet. The reconstructed ancient Greek facade and the semicircular vestibule are architecturally remarkable.
  • Seven Pines (on Birch Creek Road): This is where the magnificent hotel “Seven Pines” stood until a devastating fire. Today you can still see the foundations and pillars in the overgrown plain or use the stream flowing through the area to cool off.
