Pinelopi Goldberg

Pinelopi (Penny) Koujianou Goldberg ( Greek Πηνελόπη Κουγιανού -Goldberg * 1963 in Thessaloniki , according to other sources in 1964 ) is a Greek - American economist . She is a professor at Yale University and was Chief Economist at the World Bank from November 2018 to March 2020 .

Life

Goldberg studied from 1981 to 1986 economics at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg with a scholarship from the DAAD . After obtaining her diploma , she received her PhD from Stanford University in 1992 . From 1992 to 1999, she was an assistant professor at Princeton University . From 1998 to 2000 she received a scholarship as a Sloan Research Fellow . From 1999 to 2001 she was a professor at Columbia University and from 2001 to 2007 at Yale University. From 2007 to 2010 she was a professor at Princeton and since 2010 at Yale University.

In 2014 she was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences ; 2019 to the National Academy of Sciences . In April 2018 she was appointed to succeed Paul Romer as the new chief economist of the World Bank . She took office in November 2018. In mid-February 2020, she announced that she would leave the World Bank early and return to Yale University from March 2020. Carmen Reinhart was appointed her successor .

Goldberg's research areas are industrial organization , applied microeconomics, and the empirical analysis of international trade and its effects on income distribution.

Goldberg has been the editor of the American Economic Review since January 2011 .
