Pinguicula macroceras is a carnivorous plant from the genus of fatty herbs ( Pinguicula ).

description

Pinguicula macroceras is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows in a native rosette . The simple root system consists of numerous, white and short, fine hair roots.

The three to six fleshy, short-stalked, oblong to narrowly egg-shaped leaves are 2 to 8 inches long and 1 to 3 inches wide. Their end is blunt, the surface is covered with glandular hairs that secrete a trapping secretion with which they catch small insects and digest them through the enzymes contained therein .

The flower stem, which develops between April and August, is 5 to 15 centimeters long and has a single terminal flower. The sepals are 2 to 4 millimeters long. The upper sepal is lobed in three parts, the lobes are egg-shaped, the lower sepal is two-part, the lobes are lanceolate. The corolla is purple, the upper petal is in two parts and 1.5 to 2 millimeters long, the lower in three parts lobed. The lobes of the upper petal are elliptical, 5 to 7 millimeters long and 4 millimeters wide. The middle lobes of the lower sepal are enlarged (7 to 12 millimeters long and 6 to 7 millimeters wide) and margined in the middle, the elliptical side lobes are 6 to 9 millimeters long and 4 to 6 millimeters wide. The linear spur reaches a length of 7 to 10 millimeters and is blunt at the end. The two stamens are curved and the ovary is round.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits reach a length of 5 to 7 millimeters. The seeds are elongated ellipsoidal, around 1.5 millimeters long and 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

distribution

The species is found in a wide arc from Honshū and the Kuril Islands in Japan via Kamchatka and the Aleutian Islands to Alaska , British Columbia and Alberta in Canada and the entire west coast down to northern California . There it grows on rocks from the subalpine level at altitudes of 1200 to 5450 m.
