history

The barracks were built in 1899/1900 for the Magdeburg Pioneer Battalion No. 4 on the site of the former tower tower bastion . The battalion moved in on October 1, 1900.

At the beginning of the 1930s, the barracks, for which the spelling Pionier-Kaserne is also common, was renamed Mudra-Kaserne after the Prussian General Bruno von Mudra . After the Second World War , the facility was used by the Soviet Army . After the withdrawal of the Russian troops, the barracks were initially empty. Since 2001 it has been the seat of today's Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Integration of the country.

architecture

The buildings of the complex are built from red bricks in the neo-renaissance style, with sandstone being used for certain decorative and structural elements . In addition, cast iron ornamental anchors were used as decorative elements. The design language cites the northern Renaissance and thus the architectural style that is native to the Magdeburg region. The houses are covered with hip roofs . Several functional buildings of the facility are lined up along Turmschanzenstrasse. In the north is the one to two storey former officers' mess . Its design is reminiscent of villas from the early days .

To the south of this is the large four-story team house. The facade of the long building has 25 axes and is lavishly decorated facing the street, while the rear is plain. Its appearance is characterized by middle and side risalite . The seven-axis central projection reaches five storeys and has a magnificently designed portal made of sandstone, which is framed by half-columns. The framework of the portal also includes two arched windows on the first floor and a stepped gable rising above it. The window openings are designed as segmental arches on the lower three floors , with the second floor having walls made of sandstone. On the third floor there are windows in an upright rectangular shape, with rounded arches in the central projection.

The southern end of the building is intended for married soldiers and their families. It has also been preserved, but has been modernized. The monument also includes preserved pillars of the historic property enclosure.

In the rear area of the site there are other buildings of the barracks, such as the rest of a chamber building and the dining room for NCOs.

In the local register of monuments , the barracks are listed as a monument under registration number 094 71333 .

The complex that characterizes the cityscape is a testament to the garrison town of Magdeburg, which is important in terms of urban and military history.
