The Pirkenreuther Chapel is a ruined church in the Pirkenreuth desert in the Upper Franconian community of Pegnitz . It is located in the middle of the Hollenberg Forest in Franconian Switzerland , around one kilometer north of the village of Willenreuth on the way to the Hollenberg castle ruins .

History and description

The place Pirkenreuth with the chapel, which was dedicated to St. George , was first mentioned in 1366. At St. George, at Lorenz . Many pilgrims came there on Hedwig's and Liebfrauentag . On February 9, 1430, during the Hussite Wars , the village and church were destroyed. It is said that 68 mutilated corpses were found there after the Hussites left. The warriors had pierced the clergyman with a stake. The chapel was rebuilt around 1500. By order of the Calvinist government of the Upper Palatinate , the building was demolished in 1566, with the exception of a few remains.

In 1920 the ruins of the Pirkenreuther Chapel were uncovered. From the floor plans as well as the still standing walls of the choir and the eastern nave, it can be seen that it was a rectangular building with a receding, rectangular choir. In 1921 a wooden crucifix was erected in place of the altar. In front of the ruin there is a large boulder with an iron crucifix and a bench. No structural remains are visible from other buildings in the village of Pirkenreuth.
