Pitmedden ( Scottish Gaelic : Baile Mheadhain ) is a village in the Scottish council area of Aberdeenshire . It is located about seven kilometers southwest of Ellon and 22 kilometers north of central Aberdeen on the Bronie Burn .
history
North of Pitmedden, a stone circle testifies to the early settlement of the area. With Tolquhon Castle and Esslemont Castle there are two fortifications to the northwest and northeast, respectively, which were probably built in the course of the 15th century. The Tower House Udny Castle was built in the 16th or early 17th century.
At least since 1430 there was a manor at the site of today's Pitmedden House . It is best known for its gardens ( Pitmedden Great Garden ) and the farm museum set up in the former estate.
Between 1961 and 2011 the population of Pitmedden rose from 306 to 1,440.
traffic
The A920 leading from Ellon to Dufftown bypasses Pitmedden. It connects the village in the east to the A90 ( Edinburgh - Fraserburgh ) and in the west to the A947 (Aberdeen - Macduff ).
During the 19th century Pitmedden got its own station along the Great North of Scotland Railway . Although the line is still in operation today, the station has now been closed.
