Placi Condrau

Placi (Placidus) Condrau (* July 22, 1819 in Disentis / Mustér ; † November 22, 1902 ibid) was a Catholic-conservative politician, professor and publicist in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and, as an opinion leader, a central figure of conservatism in Graubünden.

Life

Placi Condrau's parents were Gion Fidel and Maria Cristgina Condrau, née Bundi. The father was Landammann of the Cadi .

First Placi Condrau attended the grammar school of the Disentis monastery , then he studied anthropology, psychology and natural history in Munich and Bonn. He also attended lectures in the history of religion and the philosophy of history.

Teacher

When his father died in 1843, Condrau returned to Chur , where he taught history, geography and arithmetic at the canton school from 1843 to 1850. From 1850 to 1856 Condrau taught at the grammar school in Disentis, from 1852 to 1863 he was also a school inspector for the Vorderrhein district. In 1850 he convened the first Cadi teachers' conference. Together with the politician Caspar Decurtins , he campaigned for the story Sigisbert en Rezia ("Sigisbert in the Rhaetian Valley") by Father Maurus Carnot , which retells the founding of the Disentis Monastery. In the course of a reorientation of the school system, it was banned by the government in Chur.

editor

From 1845 Condrau was an employee and editor for various magazines in the Romansh language. In December 1856 he founded the Nova Gasetta Romonscha , of which he was the publisher and owner. The Gasetta proved to be an important tool for forming opinions and safeguarding the interests of the Surselva . From 1859, Condrau was also editor of the "Calendar Romontsch".

Politician

From 1866 to 1879 Placi Condrau was Bündner Grand Councilor , from 1873 to 1877 he was Mistral (Landammann) of the Cadi.

Because the new cantonal monastery law of 1861 largely prevented the admission of novices , the Disentis monastery was threatened with dissolution. Together with Caspar Decurtins and Theophil Sprecher von Bernegg , Condrau campaigned for its preservation by repeatedly pointing out its importance for culture, religion and education in articles and letters.

Placi Condrau remained unmarried. His brother was the doctor and politician Augustin Condrau (1811-1887).
