Placidus Sprenger

Placidus Johann Philipp Sprenger OSB (born October 27, 1735 in Würzburg , † September 23, 1806 in Staffelstein ) was a Benedictine , editor and historian.

Life

He originally devoted himself to the study of law and then turned to the study of theology to become a clergyman. In 1762 he entered the Benedictine monastery of Banz and was ordained a priest there in 1766. In 1773 he became professor of theology and in 1777 librarian of the monastery. In 1796 he was elected prior of the St. Stephen's Monastery in Würzburg (today an Evangelical Lutheran parish church). He held this office in Würzburg for three years, after which time he returned to his home monastery, where he was given the office of prior. Together with Fathers Dominikus Schramm , Roman Schad and others, he was a representative of the Enlightenment.

Works

He developed his literary activity in the magazines Fränkischer Viewer published by him from 1773 , 1775 Literature of Catholic Germany , in 1792 this magazine took on the title Litterarisches Magazin for Catholics and their friends . After his appointment to Würzburg, the editorial team of this magazine was transferred to another management team, but he continued to write for this magazine. Between 1784 and 1792 he published Thesaurus rei patristicae in three volumes , Aelteste Buchdruckergeschichte von Bamberg appeared in 1800, and in 1806 the first volume of the diplomatic history of the Benedictine Abbey of Banz in Franconia 1058-1251, prevented by his death .
