Plagiognathus chrysanthemi is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 3.1 to 4.1 millimeters long. They have a greenish base color and are densely covered with dark hairs on the top. The thorns on the rails ( tibia ) are dark and arise from black points. The thighs ( femora ) of the hind legs are pale colored and darkly spotted. The antennae are characteristically colored.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed in almost the entire Palearctic Ocean and was also introduced into North America by humans. It occurs everywhere in Germany and Austria and is very common. In the Alps, it rises to around 1700 meters above sea level.

Essentially regardless of the nature of the soil, dry to moderately moist, open habitats with a species-rich herb layer are populated. The species avoids acidic and nutrient-poor extreme habitats.

Way of life

Plagiognathus chrysanthemi sucks on herbaceous plants and, like Plagiognathus arbustorum, is very polyphagous and feeds on many different host plants. These include species from many different plant families, including the sunflower (Asteraceae) and legumes (Fabaceae). The bugs primarily suckle on the immature reproductive organs of the plants. The nymphs appear in May and June, the adults of the new generation from the beginning of June to occasionally until September. The females pierce their eggs into the stems of their host plants in July and August.
