Plakothira is a genus of plants withinthe nettle family (Loasaceae). It contains three species that are exclusivelynativeto the Polynesian Marquesas Islands .

Vegetative characteristics

The Plakothira species are shrubs or perennial herbaceous plants . They have fiber roots .

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The simple leaf blade has a serrated leaf margin.

Generative characteristics

The terminal inflorescences are either complex thyrsenic or dichasias . Under each of the upright flowers are two tiny bracts .

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and four-fold with a double flower envelope . There are four sepals . The four petals are white or green. The yellow staminodes are opposite the sepals, in four groups of seven to nine pieces together, the four to six outer ones are fused together at the base and form a green or yellow scale leaf ( nectar scale ), the inner staminodes are only fused together at the base papillary hairy. The fertile stamens consist of 5 to 7 millimeter long, white stamens and tiny, light yellow anthers. The ovaries are semi-protruding.

The capsule fruits are almost spherical and straight. The seeds are narrowly ovate.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

The genus Plakothira occurs exclusively on the Polynesian Marquesas Islands .

Systematics

The genus Plakothira was published in 1985 by Jacques Florence in Bulletin du Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle , Section B, Adansonia. sér. 4, Botanique Phytochimie , Volume 7, Number 3, Page 239. Type species is Plakothira frutescens Florence The genus Plakothira belongs to the tribe Klaprothieae in the subfamily Loasoideae . Possibly the genus Plakothira belongs to the closely related genus Klaprothia .
