Southwest Thuringia planning region
The planning region Southwest Thuringia , originally: Planning region South Thuringia , renamed with the entry into force of the amended Thuringian State Planning Act (ThürLPlG) on January 1, 2002, is a unit of spatial planning that includes southern Thuringia as well as the Wartburg district and the independent city of Eisenach. The participating municipalities work together in the Regional Planning Association for Southwest Thuringia based in Suhl.

The planning region Southwest Thuringia borders in the north on the planning region North Thuringia , in the northeast on the planning region Central Thuringia and in the east on the planning region East Thuringia . In the south and west it borders on the federal states of Bavaria and Hesse .
The planning regions in Thuringia were created in 1991 on the basis of the Thuringian State Planning Act (ThLPlG). Regional development concepts based on the guidelines for promoting regional development have been financially supported with state funds since 1998.
