The Plastiki is a sailing catamaran constructed from 12,500 PET bottles . It belongs to the activist and millionaire David de Rothschild . With the Plastiki Expedition in 2010, the crew wanted to draw attention to the threat to the oceans from plastic waste .

Ship name and planning

The name Plastiki is supposed to recall the wooden boat Kon-Tiki , with which the Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl sailed across the Pacific in 1947.

Initially, Rothschild planned on April 28, 2009, the anniversary of the Kon-Tiki expedition, to sail the Pacific Ocean from North America to Australia with a raft made of plastic bottles and recycled materials . At the beginning of March 2010 the catamaran Plastiki was finally ready after three years of preparation .

Equipment and environmental friendliness of the catamaran

As is usual with sailing ships of this size, the Plastiki generated their energy with wind turbines and solar cells. During the 2010 expedition, the crew used a composting toilet and collected rainwater. The crew had hung a herb garden on the mast, of which nothing is known about the vegetation during the rough crossing. The two masts of the catamaran are made of aluminum irrigation pipes. The glue that holds the catamaran together was made from cashew nuts and sugar .

Afterlife

The plan was to dismantle the boat in Sydney and recycle the material. Upon arrival on July 26, 2010, the boat was taken to the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbor , where it was exhibited.
