The Bar-le-Duc square is one of the larger squares in the city of Griesheim in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of Hesse . It is named after Griesheim's twin town Bar-le-Duc in France. It is the terminus of Darmstadt tram lines 4 and 9, as well as three of the city's four bus routes.

location

The square is delimited in the south by Wilhelm-Leuschner-Strasse ( B 26 ), in the west by Groß-Gerauer Strasse and in the east by Schützenstrasse; in the north, the square is built on.

history

Since 1829/30 the "old school", a two-story cubic building with a hip roof and ridge turret, has stood on today's site . It was on the corner of Gross-Gerauer-Strasse and Wilhelm-Leuschner-Strasse.

From 1900 to 1953 the Griesheim municipal administration was housed in the building.

In 1973 the building was demolished to make way for a turning loop of the Darmstadt tram , since from the 1960s onwards trams were only one-way vehicles and without the loop there would have been a threat that the railway would be closed from the car hall .

Only the cookery school, which is on the square today, and the Horst-Schmidt-Halle, which is on the eastern edge of the square and both belonged to the old school, were not demolished. The old school bell hangs today in the roof turret of the new town hall, while the old clock face is in the Remise of the Griesheim Museum .

In 2011 the square was completely renovated. The stop has been made barrier-free and a new second track has been created for the tram. In addition, a bistro café was opened, the Horst-Schmidt-Halle was renovated and a small stream with green spaces was created. But even today it is still noticeable that the square owes its creation exclusively to technical reasons and primarily it is a traffic facility.
