history

Plean emerged from the independent settlements of Plean and East Plean . The former was located near the Plean House property , which was badly damaged by fire in the 1970s. East Plean developed with coal mining. There were several mines there, the last of which was closed in January 1963. In 1922, twelve miners died in a mining accident, which is still remembered today on a memorial stone in Plean County Park . There was also a quarry where sandstone was extracted.

traffic

The A9 , the most important trunk road in the Scottish Highlands , runs through Plean on its way from Falkirk to Thurso . The M9 motorway passes Plean directly north. Plean once had its own train station about a kilometer north on the Scottish Central Line .
