Please Like Me is an Australian dramedy television seriesdevelopedby Josh Thomas . Thomas also works as a screenwriter for most of the episodes. The series firstairedon ABC2 in Australia onFebruary 28, 2013, and depicts everyday problems with humor. Executive producer Todd Abbott describes the series as more of a drama than a sitcom. The series later aired in the United States on Pivot television. Pivot also helped develop the second season. A third and fourth season followed. On February 2, 2017, Josh Thomas announced on Facebook that the fourth season would be the last. He added that they were happy with what they'd been doing by then and would think the series was now complete.
In Germany, the first and second seasons of the series were shown on One in 2016 . All four seasons were released on Netflix .
The series received critical acclaim, received numerous nominations, and won eight awards.
background
The scripts of Please Like Me were mainly from Josh Thomas wrote, who also played the main character Josh. Most of the episodes were directed by Matthew Saville . Thomas and producer Todd Abbott developed the series within four years. Thomas wanted to develop a series that had never been seen before on television. It was important to him to understand the series more as a drama and less as a sitcom. The series reports on events that happen to young people, and how they deal with them is presented in a humorous way.
In January 2013, The West Australian reported that Please Like Me would air on ABC2. The series was originally intended to be shown on ABC1, but it was decided that the series would be better suited to the ABC2 digital channel. The broadcaster justified this by stating that the series tended to appeal to a younger audience and thus corresponded more to the target group of ABC2 than that of ABC1, which is watched by all age groups. This has been criticized because many believed the channels only changed because the Australian Broadcasting Corporation considered the series "too gay" for its main station. The series begins with Josh discovering he's gay. Meanwhile, his mother tries to kill herself with an overdose of Panadol.
In September 2013, ABC1 aired the series at 10pm on Wednesday evenings, six months after it aired on ABC2.
In July 2013 it was announced that the series would air in the United States on Pivot. The first episode was initially released online before airing on the station. Pivot launched the pleaselikeme.org social media website where viewers could share their personal experiences on how to deal with stigmatization and the fear of not being liked. Reference was also made to series.
On July 26, 2013, it was announced that ABC and Pivot would air a second season with ten episodes. This season first aired in America on August 8, 2014. In addition to the well-known figures, some new figures were introduced. On July 12, 2014, it was announced that there would be a third season with ten episodes. On July 7, 2016, a fourth season with six episodes was ordered. On February 2, 2017, it was announced that season 4 would be the final season of the series.

Thomas' script is good and comedic, but its portrayal in the series does not live up to expectations. TV Tonight's David Knox praised the performance of the actors and actresses.

He added that Josh, his family, and friends were portrayed incredibly well. His colleague Scott Ellis says Please Like Me is an important show and the kind of show ABC should invest more in. He added that the series is empathetic and insightful when it comes to more violent moments. Craig Mathieson believed the darker moments on the series were one of the most humorous moments. Please Like Me was to be shown at the Series Mania Television Festival in Paris.
