geography

River course

The river rises north of the Harts Range about 125 km northeast of Alice Springs . It flows first to the east along the Plenty Highway , which it passes under at Jervois . At the same time it turns its course to the southeast and splits into a Western Channel and an Eastern Channel , which remain separated for about 60 km and then flow together again. The Plenty River mostly seeps away underground after a total of 340 km in the eastern part of the Simpson Desert .

In particularly wet years it flows into the Hay River in the eastern part of the Simpson Desert - an additional distance of approx. 60 km.
