Plimmerton is a suburb of Porirua City in the Wellington region ofthe North Island of New Zealand .

geography

Plimmerton is located about 6 km south-southwest of the city center of Porirua directly on the northern part of the entrance to Porirua Harbor . The New Zealand State Highway 1 connects the suburb directly with the city center of Porirua and is separated by it to the east from the Camborne district . The Hongoeka district adjoins it to the north . 6 km to the north-northeast can be reached via the State Highway Pukerua Bay .

history

The area around Plimmerton was settled early by the Māori , because according to tradition, the Polynesian navigator and explorer Kupe landed here with his canoe Matahorua around 950 AD . The anchor stone of his canoe can be seen today in the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa , the National Museum of New Zealand in Wellington . In the 1840s the place was the seat of Te Rauparaha , the leader of the Ngāti Toa , who was captured here by the British on July 23, 1846. Near the south end of Motuhara Road is a tiny sanctuary with a cabbage tree ( Cordyline australis ), possibly a descendant of the tree near which it was caught, and a plaque.

The original street layout and street names go back to the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company , which built a rail link between Wellington and Longburn , which is near Palmerston North . Several cities were founded along the route, which should benefit the line economically. Wellington Provincial Council member John Plimmer was a key organizer of the company. In the late 1890s, Plimmerton was a well-known resort.

For a long time Plimmerton was administratively part of Hutt County until the place became a suburb of Porirua on April 1, 1973 .

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 2,118 inhabitants, 2.9% more than in the 2006 census.
