Pukerua Bay

Pukerua Bay is a district of Porirua City in the Wellington region ofthe North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

In the Māori language , “pukerua” means “two hills”.

geography

The district is located around 12 km north-northeast of the city center of Porirua directly on the coast of the Kapiti Coast . The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Pukerua Bay and connects the district directly with the city center of Porirua . The North Island Main Trunk Railway also runs directly through the district.

Most of the houses in Pukerua Bay are on a saddle between two hills that rise about 60-80 m above sea level. The coast around the place is very steep and behind the two beach zones there is only room for a few houses. Two hiking trails lead into the area between Pukerua Bay and Plimmerton , about 3 miles south, one along the rocky coast and the other along the railway line.

population

In the 2013 census, the district had 1,896 inhabitants, 9.9% more than in the 2006 census.
