Plutonium (III) iodide is a chemical compound consisting of the elements plutonium and iodine . It has the formula PuI 3 and belongs to the iodide class of substances .

Plutonium (III) iodide can be produced by reacting plutonium with mercury (II) iodide .
It can also be represented by reacting plutonium with hydrogen iodide at 450 ° C. The smallest traces of oxygen or water lead to the immediate decomposition of the plutonium (III) iodide to plutonium oxyiodide in this reaction .

Plutonium (III) iodide is a green solid that melts at 777 ° C. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system ( plutonium (III) bromide type) in the space group Ccmm (space group no. 63, position 2) with the lattice parameters a = 433 pm , b = 1395 pm and c = 996 pm.
