Origin and history

The Podenco Andaluz belongs to the group of the Podencos (port. Podengo), which is widespread on the Iberian Peninsula and the offshore islands. It is unclear whether these dogs go back to the ancient Egyptian Tesem , as is sometimes assumed, or whether they developed independently of one another from Mediterranean pariah dogs .

As the name suggests, the Podenco Andaluz comes from the Andalusia region . Podenco breeds or Podengos are basically local types in Spain and Portugal. They are hunting dogs, solitary hunters for small game, especially for wild rabbits . Many of these breeds hunt softly, which means they bring the prey back to the hunter alive. Only three of these local strikes have been recognized by the FCI , namely the Podenco Ibicenco from the Balearic Islands , the Podenco Canario from the Canary Islands and the Podengo Português from Portugal . The Podenco Andaluz is not there yet. However, it is recognized as a breed at the national level by the Spanish breeding association RSCE and since January 2015 by the DWZRV.
