Josef Polatschek

Josef Polatschek (born December 28, 1910 , † August 1, 1984 in Oberpullendorf ) was an Austrian local researcher and gardener .

The son of a forester was a trained gardener. After the Second World War he built one of the largest and most successful gardening companies in Burgenland . He received several gold medals and awards for his successful pelargonium cultivations .

Since 1961, Ökonomierat Josef Polatschek was a volunteer at the Burgenland State Museum in Eisenstadt . Over 1,300 detailed reports and exact mappings resulted in around 3,000 sites, 20,000 pings and 1,200 iron slag sites . He handed over around 4,000 parcels to the Burgenland State Museum, including the Neolithic special find "Venus von Unterpullendorf ". His tireless work, which he continued until shortly before his death despite his serious illness, transformed the Oberpullendorf district in Burgenland from a blank spot on the map into one of the best-recorded areas in Austria. He paid particular attention to research into Celtic iron extraction and smelting . Polatschek's research activities were recognized in 1975 at the international symposium "Archaeological Iron Research in Europe", which took place in Eisenstadt. Josef Polatschek became known beyond the borders of his homeland through numerous media reports. Since 1970 Josef Polatschek was a member of the Austrian Society for Prehistory and Early History .
