history

Lookout tower at the top of Poledník

The Poledník had been in the restricted military area since the Iron Curtain was erected and belonged to the Dobrá Voda military training area . At the end of the 1960s, the Czechoslovak army erected a military object for radio and radio reconnaissance on the mountain. After the restricted area was dissolved after 1989, the national park administration bought the property in 1997, the majority of the military installations on the mountain were demolished and the tower was redesigned for viewing purposes.

At the northeastern foot of the ridge was the small settlement Jezerní (Seeberg) until 1948 , where a tank firing range was built. The former Jezerní shooting range has been inaccessible because of the ammunition remains stored there and has been left for natural reforestation.

The observation tower, which opened in July 1998, is 37 meters high and is only accessible via 227 steps from June to October. It offers a wide view over the central Bohemian Forest and the Bavarian Forest , with a distant view as far as the Alps . A hut was built next to the tower, which houses a snack bar.

Poledník can be reached all year round via the 8.5 km long red marked hiking trail from Prášily. The border path, which runs from Frantův most on Gsenget over Poledník to Javoří pila , is only open from July to September, as it leads through the capercaillie reserve of the Šumava National Park .
